Opinions, please!

Do you remember this dress? It started out as a truly heinous 90s jumper and ended up being a real cute little almost-Modcloth-ish-if-you-squint-and-tilt-your-head summer piece:

I was happy with it riiiiiight up until I got my latest Delia's catalog in the mail and saw this dress:

I want it. I want it bad.

I was starting to plan out a knockoff dress and realized I'm only a crochet neckline away from making a really similar version out of my 90s jumper dress. And when I made this top the other day for my etsy shop, I couldn't stop thinking about adding this same neckline to my dress:

But my husband flipped through the Delia's catalog and insisted that I had found
the ugliest dress in it to add to my wish list.(But the man leaves the house regularly in mismatched sweatclothes, so I'm not sure I should really listen to his opinion on fashion.)

So I need your opinions . . . Am I crazy? Do you like the Delia's dress, too? And most importantly--should I try it out on my black dress?
(I would lower the dress's existing neckline first so it has more of a scoop neck, so if it doesn't look cute, I'm not sure the dress will look that great even if I take the crochet part off again!)

  1. Yes! I like the Delias dress and think the crochet top would make your new dress even prettier!! Go for it!!
What do husbands know about fashion anywho! lol
I know how you feel, I sometimes pick out a dress and think it's the cutest thing ever and then I make the mistake of asking my husband and he looks at me like if I am holding a dead animal or something LOL

  2. You know, most people will say...Yes! It's cute. Go ahead and do it!!! That's what friends say right? Well, I think it looks like something Malory would wear on Family Ties. Totally Eighties to me. Do I like it? It's okay. Love to see what you do though. LOL

  3. You.Are.So.FUNNY! Hahahha! And as I type this comment, I'm seeing a very crazy cat lady pic of you in the 'You might also like:' blogpost/pic area below this post. I'm laughing my head off at it all, and forgot even what I'm supposed to comment about! OH ya, right, my opinion. LOL! LOVE the Delia dress, and would you drop the sleeves on your {modcloth} look alike?!? I think it's cute and don't listen to your husband on this one. He's got no clue :)

    OH and P.s.
haven't you already learned NOT to ask your husband about fashion questions, I mean for ex:, "do you think I should wear the green flats, or the nude pumps" and he picks the nude pumps and you wear the green flats anyway??!?! I know you've done THAT too many times to count. That should be your first clue in NOT asking the hubs :)

  6. by the time you are done with the cat lady dress it is going to be a handerchief, for that will be all the fabric left.. I say go for it. and keep seeing how many other dresses you can turn it into before you are done with it. Great progression, post an update if you make it.

  7. go for it. are you also going to add elastic/elastic thread/shirring to the waist to cinch it up a bit like the delia's dress? I think it would be really cute.

  8. Yes, redo for sure. I would lose the pink bow for that neckline anyday. Good luck!

  13. Cute! I think the dress would be adorable on you! I don't think I could pull it off - I wore those heinous 90's dresses the first time around in college. lol!
I am in love with the crocheted tank too - very creative and pretty. Off topic, but I really love your short hairstyle. Makes me want to cut mine short again. ;)

  14. Thanks for stopping by my blog and for the nice comment on my skirt refashion! =) I see we both love thrifting and refashioning old items. Isn't it fun? I'm afraid I have to disagree with your hubby though, I really like that dress too! Also, your hair is adorable. =) Have a fabulous day! (P.S. totally following you, I'm already insanely inspired by the outfits you've shared, can't wait to see more!).

  15. Of course you should do it! Then when you're finished and it's all cutesy and he's profusely complimenting you on the dress that you're wearing out to some special occassion, you can innocently remind him that he hated the dress that you copied yours from!

At least, that's what I would do...I'm just saying.

  16. Well I'm not the world's biggest fashionista as my everyday outfit is always jeans, plaid sneakers, and some kind of a shirt, but I'm not a huge fan of the dress. But I think you could add a cuter crochet thing to it than the Delia's one. I think theirs looks a little weird, but I like the one on your tank top. I will ask Hallie for her professional fashion opinion :)

  17. Your tank top is so cute! That neckline would look great on your dress. I think it would add just the right amount of detail :)

  21. Ohhhh yes, you should definitely do it! I think the combination between the florals and crocheted top is just so perfect for Spring! Share pictures, I want to see how it turns out! (Husbands should never be trusted with those kinds of decisions:) Have a great weekend!!! xoxo

  23. I am with your husband on this one.
I am confident you could make your current dress even more amazing with a crocheted neckline, but can't say I would advise a friend to wear the one Delia's is selling.
But it sounds like your husband and I are in the minority. Ha!

  24. Love the dress! So--go for it, girl! I don't know anything about crochet (other than I like to wear it!), but if you are really nervous about the changing the dress neckline, could you make a crocheted collar that is detachable? That way, you won't lose your cute revamped dress if it doesn't turn out just right. I suppose it depends on your mood. If you're feeling brave, just do it. Not so much? Try the collar. I can't wait to see what you end up with! With your talent, it'll rock! : )
