Baby Shower Gift :: Homemade Sugar Scrub in Decorated Jars

I wrote the other day about a project I was really excited about but needed to finish up, and here it is! These were gifts for a triple baby shower (not triplets, but three lovely ladies all due within a few weeks of each other, although triplets would be exciting) that I attended yesterday.

All three babies-to-be got sweet goodies from my shop (a bear hat for the little boy and button beanies for the girls) but I wanted to do something for the moms, too. It's so fun to open presents for your little nugget, but poor pregnant mom is the one doing all the hard work, and she deserves something, too! So I thought back to my final weeks of pregnancy--huge, bloated, swollen, miserable weeks--and thought of what I would have liked to have then (other than an early, pain-free labor . . . much as I wish I could bottle that up to gift to my friends) and came up with this:

Mamas need some pampering, right? I whipped up some homemade sugar scrub and packed it into cute little decorated jars so they could enjoy some time to themselves before their little ones arrive!

 How true it is.

And want to know the best part of this gift? They cost me $1 apiece.
(Don't tell my friends.)
And I had enough sugar scrub left over to keep for little ol' me, so I can tell you, this stuff is goooooooooooood.

And how much cuter would these be if you're a lucky duck who owns a Silhouette or Cricut (or even just cute punches) and could cut fun shapes for the labels? I just winged it (wung it?), but I was wishing the whole time that my labels had scalloped edges or a fun shape.

Want to make some yourself? Read on, friend, read on . . .

What you'll need for the jars:
- jars (mine were 7 oz. and cost $1 each at Joann's)
(they should really start paying me for how much I talk about them on my blog)
- cute scrapbook papers (you'll only need a tiny bit, and I chose 2 coordinating papers per jar)
- Mod Podge (my latest obsession)
- brush
- scissors

Wash and dry your jars before starting. Then cut a piece of cute paper into the shape you want for your label (I went with an oval shape), apply mod podge to the area of the jar you want to place the label, and press on your paper, smoothing out any wrinkles or bubbles.

I'm sure you could do fancier labels than mine if you're good at graphic design-type things, but I'm not, so I typed up a label on Word--apply mod podge to the scrapbook paper, apply the label, smooth it out, and add another coat of mod podge over the entire label--I purposely brushed mod podge past the edges of the label onto the jar to make sure it would stick on nice and tight, but cleaned up any out-of-control unruly streaks with a q-tip before letting it dry.

Set your cute li'l jar aside and move on to the lids!

Place your jar on the wrong side of the scrapbook paper, bend the paper up to the top of the lid, and make a few marks around where the paper meets the lid top:

Cut a circle at least 1/4" away from the marks, then make cuts about 1/4" apart extending in towards your markings:

Apply mod podge to the top of your lid and apply the paper (wrong side down), smoothing out any bubbles. Apply mod podge to the lid sides as well, folding the paper up around the sides (there will be some wrinkling . . . it's no big deal, just press them as flat as you can).

Working on a few strips at a time, apply mod podge to the little fringey tabs and press them down inside of the lid, pushing them firmly against the inside of the lid.
(I was excited about getting the mod podge all over my fingers . . . is it just me, or is the best part about mod podging peeling it off of your hands after it dries? Do you remember doing this with glue when you were a kid?)

Apply a layer of mod podge over the lid top and sides and let it dry, then flip over and apply to the paper around the inside of the lid as well.

While you're anxiously waiting for all your pieces to dry, you can start making your sugar scrub! Bear in mind, I made enough to fill 3 jars and still had enough left over for a jar for myself, so this makes a lot! You may want to scale the recipe down if you're only making one jar!

What you'll need for the sugar scrub:
- mixing bowl and spoon
- 3 cups white sugar
- 1 cup + 2 Tbsp. good quality oil (I used olive oil, but you can use any nice, non-smelly oil)
- 10 drops of yummy-scented essential oil per jar (I went with mandarin, peppermint, and lavender)

Combine your sugar and oil, mix it up well, and divide into separate bowls (if you're planning to flavor them separately). Add your essential oil, stir, and divide among your jars.
Done! Easy peasy!

(My husband came in at this point, asked what I was making, and picked up the spoon to take a bite. I wish now I hadn't stopped him . . . I wonder how this stuff tastes?)

When the jars were dry, I filled them up and decorated them by tying a bit of string (maybe it's jute? or twine? I don't know), a cute button, and a little gift tag.

Now they can draw a nice bath, light some candles, and struggle to reach all the way down to their puffy hippo feet for a nice scrub!

Edited 10/8/11: In response to some questions I've received about this project, here are some more details:
- for the sugar, I just used plain old sugar  . . . white sugar, granulated sugar, table sugar, whatever you want to call it. You probably already have it in your cabinet! I didn't get too fancy with the ingredients ;-)
- I was lucky and already had essential oils on hand (left over from my massage therapy days), but I believe you can purchase them at health food stores, and I've even seen them at Michael's craft stores. If all else fails, you can definitely find some online!

  53. I recently found this post through Pinterest and made myself some peppermint scrub this afternoon, using the remnants from the mixing bowl to wash my hands. They're so soft and moisturized! And because of the peppermint a bit tingly, too.

FYI - my kiddos took a swipe of some that fell on the counter and it was all I could do to keep them from attacking the entire jar. ;)

I'm going to attempt to make these as gifts this Christmas - it's a great, easy, and personalized idea.

    ReplyDelete
  54. So easy. Can't wait to try this.

    ReplyDelete
  55. This is such a great idea! I will have to make these for Christmas gifts! Where did you buy the scented oil, or where can you buy scented oil?! Thanks!!

    ReplyDelete
  56. You should be able to find essential oils at a health food store/natural marketplace . . . I even saw some at Michael's craft store the other day! Good luck :-)

  61. Thanks so much for sharing. I also found from Pinterest and absolutely love how they turned out! I did want to mention that there are some essential oils that should not be used while pregnant. There may be more than the ones listed here: If you are pregnant avoid: Basil, Cedarwood,Clary, Coriander, Hyssop, Jasmine, Juniper,Marjoram. Oregano, Myrrh,Peppermint (which should also be avoided while nursing), Rockrose, Rosemary,Sage and Thyme.

  62. Thank you for posting your how to!
May I please plead with you to change your edit about the essential oils though? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't buy essential oils at Michael's or even the health food store and I don't believe you need to buy oils from one of the currently popular MLM companies to get quality. They are truly meant for aroma only an not for the skin. I have a few sources I really like (and I am not making ANY money for telling you about any of them) but all have high quality oils that are therapeutic. I like Mountain Rose Herbs for decent oils, and Kally from Compass Concepts/Indigo Mountain for fabulous oils. Her website is http://www.compassconcepts.com/retailer/store_templates/shell_id_1.asp?storeID=01E8653BE8484D938C57CF1242D47682
I also like the line that can be purchased at www.drchristophersherbs.com I have personally spoken with the wholesaler who sells to Addison at Christopher's herbs who sources the oils. He is adamant about staying small, finding excellent sources, and many are small farmers who rely on quality for repeat business. If you are going to go through the effort of making a beautiful gift for someone, don't skimp and use cheap oils, use something of quality. Lavender isn't a very expensive oil even from a reputable supplier.

  63. I'm going to make scrub for CHristmas gifts-I've only made it for myself to see how it turned out. Anyway, how far in advance do you think I can make it? Also, if people are concerned about essential oils, I don't use them simply because of their availability. Instead, I use extract from the grocery store. I use lemon, orange, and peppermint extracts, along with vanilla in some. It works just fine.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I just want to get clarification on the type of oil to use to scent the scrub. Do I get the scrub that they have at Hobby Lobby or a craft store to make homemade soaps, etc. or do I need to get the oils somewhere else? I really think that this would make a GREAT Christmas gift but I want some clarification before attempting to make it and it not be correct.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I just made your sugar scrubs for some xmas presents and LOVED it! Thanks for the great idea :-)

    ReplyDelete
  66. Carrie--since they're made from natural ingredients and don't contain preservatives, I wouldn't recommend making them too far in advance . . . not more than a few days if you can manage it. They won't last forever since there aren't any preservatives/chemicals to keep it fresh, so I'd try and make it just a few days before you plan to give it, if you can :-)

Momof2girls--I'm not sure I can be too helpful here . . . I used essential oils that I already had on hand (I got them while I was in massage school and they're still kicking!), so I've actually never shopped for oils! A commenter before you recommended investing in high quality oils bought online, not the type you find at craft stores, and another recommended using flavored extracts from the grocery store. My oils are Body High brand, and I've been happy with them (although I'm certainly no expert on oils/scents/etc.!). Personally--and this is just me speaking as a cheapskate DIYer and not an aromatherapist or professional of any kind--I think the extract from the grocery store idea sounds interesting and very affordable . . . I might try that out next time I make this recipe. I'm not sure I'd be willing to spend much on oils (again, not an aromatherapist/professional . . . just a crafter on a budget!), but I'm sure if you've got a little extra money in the craft budget, they're probably a great investment!

    ReplyDelete
  67. This is a great gift idea, thank you so much for sharing it!

    ReplyDelete
  68. Rachel, how long would you say they would last if I were to make them for Christmas gifts? I sell Scentsy Wickless Candles. I am in charge an event next week at a school. I was thinking that this might be another great little gift for the teachers. I know that this does not have anything to do with Scentsy but does go with the theme that the principal is wanting to have!!

    ReplyDelete
  69. Hello again! That sounds like so much fun--I bet they'd be perfect! I wouldn't recommend making them more than a day or two in advance--since they don't have any preservatives, they will go bad eventually, so if I were you, I'd try and hold off making them until maybe a day or so before the event. You could make the jars further ahead and just whip up the scrub the day before or something--it doesn't take long. I never had any long enough to watch it spoil (I've always used it up pretty quickly), so I don't know exactly how long it takes to spoil, but I did notice when I've made it that the sugar gets a little hard/crusty over time if it isn't used quickly . . . I'd hate for it to already be crusty the day you give it :-)

  70. This DIY project is great! I found this through pinterest. I did decide to go with sunflower oil after reading information on different carrier oils, however That website was really helpful for basic information about the types of exfoliants, carrier oils (vegetable oil, olive oil, sunflower oil, etc), and fragrance to use. Below is the link to that in case anyone wants to school themselves a little =)

    http://www.homemade-gifts-made-easy.com/homemade-body-scrub.html#axzz1bHEKGrXU

I do have a question for you though--I read that you printed out the white label from your computer and mod podged it on, using mod podge over the label as well. My question is, did you let the ink "cure" for an amount of time, or did you just print it and slap it on there? Do you have an ink jet printer? The reason I ask is because I am going to be making photo coasters for Christmas gifts and I read a lot of different blogs stating the mod podge will smear the ink if you use your own printer and to get photo prints made at kinko's, costco's walmart, etc. Also, that inkjet and laser printers will give you the issues of smearing, but not ones that use toner ink. I want to get around getting photos made up if I can =)

Please let me know and thanks for such an awesome tutorial!

    ReplyDelete
  71. Hi sroper! I have an inkjet printer, and I think the labels only sat and cured for the length of time it took me to get all the rest of my supplies ready (although I did make these 8 months ago, so my memory could be off). If you're worried, you could certainly let them sit a while longer (maybe print the day before you plan to make the jars?), but if I remember right, I didn't give it much curing time--I think I just printed them out, got all my supplies together, and got started.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Love it!!! I just made some for Christmas gifts. I used safflower oil. First I tried olive oil and the smell of the oil was too strong and made the sugar yellow. I like the safflower oil much better. Plus safflower oil has antioxidants and Vitamin E in it! :) Thanks for the recipe!!

    ReplyDelete
  73. Thank you so much! I am used to paying almost $40 for this stuff! I didn't use any fragrance, just put lotion on after! Thank you again!

  74. Hi, I love this tutorial!

I started making my own body scrubs recently, and have been experimenting with different oils. Not sure if anyone else commented this yet, but I feel coconut oil works best. It's a solid oil generally, so it's good to add almond oil to keep it soft. Safflower oil is just too oily for an everyday product, although with any oil you have to be careful about the ratio of oil vs. sugar. Olive oil does have a very strong smell, while safflower oil and coconut oil have little/no scent. I found a big jar of organic coconut oil for around $4. Pretty reasonable.

I love the jars you used and how you dressed them up, absolutely precious! :)

  79. What I dont get is, I am new to most crafting, and when I read the posts, where you use the essential oils, I have looked for these, and the only things I could find local costs at least 10 cents a drop, and that was for a not so favorite smell! Where do you get the oils that you can make a whole jar of scrub, for $1?

    ReplyDelete
  80. Jenny--the oils can sure get pricey! I lucked out . . . I already had all the ingredients (including the oils) on hand, so my only cost to make this was the jars themselves. Another commenter recommended using flavored extracts from the grocery store to scent the scrub, which would be quite a bit cheaper than essential oils (like lemon extract, peppermint extract, etc.)--I haven't tried that myself, but it sounds like a really good alternative!

    ReplyDelete
  81. I wouldn't recommend using Olive Oil as I did and the smell way overpowered the oil. I actually ended up using vegetable oil on my sugar scrub because of the smell of the evoo.

    ReplyDelete
  82. I was able to find cheap oils in the soap making section of the craft store. I think I paid about 3 dollars for each bottle! I didn't use Mod Podge to stick the labels on, I used rubber cement instead. It wasn't quite as messy. I gave this as a gift for Christmas with a pair of Aloe infused socks, an eye mask, and a relaxation CD. It was a big hit!

    ReplyDelete
  83. Thanx for the info on the oils, now I am stuck in the wood world, O my goodness, I am just finding waay too much stuff, that I wanna try! When my sons were little I had no time, now that the youngest is 17, I have waaay to much time! Just a tip on the modge podge, the home made stuff on pinterest, really does work, it is way cheaper, and no where near as messy! I love modge podge, I probablly, spent $100, on it last year, (a lot of photo tables) I was afraid the 50% elmers and 50% water would not work, but it does!

I almost forgot why I came here, but finally found my way back. :) I'm thinking of doing this for my mom's wedding shower in April for favors (of which I'm hosting as Matron of Honor-yay!). It's a tea party theme & mason jars of all shapes, sizes, and colors will be in abundance.

  100. Absolutely adore this idea! I am in a group that sends care packages to mother's who have lost one or both babies due to Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS) and this is definitely something I'll be including in my packages! Thank you!

  118. Do the oils leak out? I'm trying to send a hand scrub but the oils leak out and I don't know how to prevent that

    ReplyDelete
  119. You will need to be exceptionally careful to not introduce ANY water into this mix (do not store in bathroom where the humidity is high, do not use while in the bath or shower, do not put your fingers into the jar after they are wet) OR you will need to add a preservative. Fail to do one or the other and you will grow some nice nasty bacteria and/or mold! And, as an fyi, it is there long before you can see it with the naked eye.

@searching4miracles; you get oil leakage when you have used too much for the recipe. So add more dry ingredients and you should be fine.

Please know that essential oils are not just fragrance and should not be used without proper study and understanding of them. They each have a max use rate and each use rate is different for each type of product (you can generally add more to bar soap than a lotion etc.) Additionally, there are some that are not for use in certain products or are quite minimal in the amount that you can use. None should be used undiluted, so use gloves when working with them. Failing to do so could cause a lifelong sensitization or skin irritation. Unless you are wanting to study these oils, you may just want to purchase skin safe fragrance oils and use those. While fragrance oils also have use rates, many vendors list those on their sites.

  120. ps. someone also mentioned using food coloring, this is not a good idea. It can stain a tub and/pr stain skin. They do make plenty of skin safe colorants for bath and body products. You can purchase them at soap supply vendors.
