Sunkissed Legs (a post in which my deathly white legs finally look like they belong to a living human being)

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Sally Hansen.

As a lifelong vampire-white pale girl, I’ve tried many a self-tanning product in my day. I just want something that provides a natural-looking tan, doesn’t look streaky or splotchy, and won’t rub off on my clothes (I don’t even want to talk about what one recent self-tanning attempt did to my white [previously white] nursing bra . . . my only nursing bra, I might add)—is that so much to ask?

I’ve had my eye on Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs for a while. It’s a bit different from the typical self-tanner—rather than tinting your skin for days at a time, it simply washes off with soap and water. I kind of liked this idea, since in my struggle to find a great self-tanner, I’ve often ended up with not-so-attractive streaks and splotches and orange patches that have lasted for days (sometimes weeks), left behind by products that just wouldn’t quit. So I was intrigued by the idea of using a self-tanner ‘as needed,’ with low commitment—apply it for a special night out or to go with an outfit, then wash it away and don’t worry about it wearing off unevenly.

I wasn’t kidding about being pale.

Not kidding at all.

Let’s start with the traditional ‘before’ shot. My whitey-white legs, gleaming in their pure white glory. Put on your shades, folks, and do not adjust your monitors.

I was worried about getting it to look streak-free and even . . . I can never seem to get sunless tanners to look smooth, and how embarrassing would it be to have to post pictures of my streaky, splotchy tanning attempt here? But I was actually really impressed with how well it smoothed on—it was easy to work over the skin, and it blended very nicely. I got a little overconfident/slap-happy and wasn’t as careful as I should have been around my ankles and feet (I should have moisturized them first to keep things smooth), but even so, I loved how evenly it applied.

Major difference from the before picture, eh? I love how real it looks—golden and natural-looking, I don’t think I’d have guessed this came from a bottle. And since it’s still a little chilly here in Utah, it’s the perfect sun-free way to add some color for a date or girls night out, and a must-have for your summer beauty repertoire. (And in case you’re wondering, I don’t see any reason you’d have to limit it to your legs—I applied some to my arms, chest, and face [sparingly!], and thought it looked great!)

If it weren’t for the sweater (which, believe me, was an unfortunate necessity), I think I might have been able to fool you into thinking I’d actually left the house and seen the sun recently (Jeff joked the other day while we were out for a walk with the kids that this must be Darcy’s first time in the great outdoors, which is not a huge exaggeration . . . homebody alert).

  1. A couple of questions from a fellow vamponite (made up word, but I describe myself as having vampire skin).
    1. What color did you get?
    2. Did it turn your hands orange?
    3. I need to use this, in a wedding in 3 weeks and I guarantee I am more pale than you!

  2. 1. I used the Medium Glow in these pictures. I also have the Light Glow (I haven't tried it yet, but I'm planning to give it a go tomorrow, actually--I'll keep you posted!) and maybe would recommend you start there, if you're even paler than I am.
    2. Sort of--it does turn your hands orange, but since it's washable, it isn't a problem. I just washed my hands with soap and water once I was done applying it to my legs, and it washes off cleanly. So it does turn them orange initially, but it washes off 100%.
    3. I think you should give it a try! I really do not get good results with self-tanner, normally, and was very pleased with this. I have a wedding in a few weeks, too, and am planning to use it then! Good luck!

  3. Ow ow. Nice legs. I'm intrigued. I like the idea of being able to wash it off!

  4. Looks good! The wash off immediately thing is a plus for sure. That said, FWIW, if you were to walk into a dermatologists office she/he would no doubt hold an impromptu seminar on what beautiful porcelain skin looks like. Take it from one who went in for a whole body skin check and the first thing out of the Drs mouth was "Well, someone was a sun worshipper!" I stick pins in his voodoo doll to this day........

  5. I've tried this in the past, but it seemed to have shimmer/glitter in it, which was a definite no-go for me. Did you notice that? Or maybe they've changed the formula? I wanted to love it, but being sparkly isn't for me.

  6. I really like that--as much as I want (and hopefully will someday find) an amazing sunless tanner that looks great long-term, I haven't found one yet that I've liked enough to WANT it to stick around! So this is a good option in the meantime.

  7. Ha! So true. That's why I'm hopelessly devoted to SPF :-)

  8. Definitely a shimmer to the spray-on, but the lotion version doesn't seem to have any shimmer to it that I've noticed! Maybe give that a try!

  9. What I meant was if YOU (personally) walked into a Dermo office as is...your skin looks just that phenomenal :-)

  10. I just had my first experience with sunless tanner this weekend--rubbing it on my MIL's legs. No joke. She has a small range of movement in her hips and legs, so I was the lucky one. Seems like a cool product; I'll tell her ghostly legs that it's worth a shot.

BTW, your paleness is not to a scary level. I'd classify it as more like, proper pioneer girl who keeps her sunbonnet on. I fall into the category of squaw who shows more-skin-than-she-should in the backyard. Just keepin' it real. Holla'!

  11. I keep seeing this stuff and shy away from buying it because I wasn't sure if it really worked. I totally need to get some! Your legs look so natural! I have been using Jergens (thank GOD they fixed the scent) but I get way too much streakage/orange hands. UGH. Can't wait to try this stuff!!

  12. The sole purpose of my Twitter account is for random stuff like this and giveaways, so I'm in! :D I'm intrigued. I have a self-tanner I recently discovered, which I LOVE (Tanwise mousse) It's cheaper than others and the color is perfect and application is easy. But....a big drawback for me is that you have to keep it on for 4-6 hours before washing off the bronzer.....and for me that is just hard to make happen since it DOES stain in those initial hours. Angry face. So this is appealing to me.

  13. I also have the skin tone of a ghost. Being an indoor homebody = no sunburns!
