(I had tentatively scheduled a crochet along Q&A for today, but I don't think we need it--there haven't been very many questions, which I guess is great and means you feel good about this whole crochet thing! If you've been hanging on to any questions, don't be shy! And don't forget to add your pictures to the Maybe Matilda flickr group if you'd like to share your work. I've had so much fun seeing how your cowls are coming along!)
Let's see how many Firefly fans are reading this. My sister-in-law helped me out with a Father's Day gift for Jeff back in June, and requested that instead of sending a check for the money she spent, I recreate the iconic Jayne hat for her.
It's probably the ugliest thing I've ever made.
But it's definitely my favorite.
Pretty cunning, don'tcha think?
(note reads: "Girl walks down the street in that hat, people know she's not afraid of anything.")
In case you don't know what's going on, here's a clip for you. Watch. Enjoy. Develop an embarrassing crush on Captain Tightpants. Then join me in the deep, hopeless, crushing sense of despair that comes of knowing there will never be more Firefly.

(You can watch the whole series on Netflix!)
One of the greatest shows EVER!!!! Last fall, pregnancy complications put me the hospital for six week. I watched the whole series (again) in a few days. It was quite the spirit lifter! Love it! And your hat is awesome! :)
ReplyDeleteOk, I'm not sure what to say about the hat, but the hubbs has been trying to get me to watch Firefly for-ever. Some how it keeps moving down the queue, but everyone seems to like it so maybe I'll have to give it a try.
ReplyDeleteI've never watched this Firefly you speak of, but I can appreciate the uniqueness of the hat. It will definitely be a conversation piece for your sister-in-law.
ReplyDeleteI have never seen that show before. Maybe I should watch it?? I think the hat looks great on you, but you can rock anything, really. :)
ReplyDeleteSo awesome! My hubby and I watched the whole Firefly series on Netflix earlier this year and loved it! Now we're watching Battlestar Galactica. We never knew we were sci-fi nerds, but the evidence is starting to be convincing. And it definitely takes a brave person to wear that hat. :)
ReplyDeleteLoved that show! Miss it greatly. And love the hat!
ReplyDeleteLOVE. LOVE. LOVE. Shiny.
ReplyDeleteNot familiar with Firefly but I kind of love this. The colors are so 70's inspired which is definitely on trend right now. :)
ReplyDeleteCunning?
ReplyDeleteDamn strait.
If I had that thing I'd wear it everywhere...those moms dropping off their kids at the elementary wouldn't know what hit them.

I don't know much about Firefly but you look smokin' hot in that hat lady! ;0)
ReplyDeleteNow all you need is Vera ;D
ReplyDeleteSaw the title of your post but before I even read your words, I thought, "Thats not ugly! That looks like Jayne's hat!" I think that says enough right there ;) Love that show!
ReplyDeleteUm...awesomest! Love it and the note is too cute!
ReplyDeletethat is the cutest hat!! never seen the series, but think im gonna have too:) maybe i will watch it when i get the chance to start the crochet along...dang house is cutting my craft time short:)
ReplyDeleteI've been known to make a Jayne hat or two. Love me some Firefly!
ReplyDeleteShiny! Please tell me where to get the pattern. This hat is actually why I wanted to learn to crochet. My husband wants one so bad.
ReplyDeleteKya--I wish I could! I didn't follow a pattern, I just kind of winged it. But I have a few links for you: http://crochetme.com/media/p/94702.aspx and http://iamzuul.livejournal.com/716986.html
ReplyDeleteHope those work out for you!
I love bright colors... lovely hat!!
ReplyDeleteYou made me laugh so hard I woke one of the kids up! One of my favourite shows and I loved that hat! Tell your sister to wear it with pride.
ReplyDeleteOh, how I love Firefly. And I adore the fact that you recreated that hat! SO fun! =)
ReplyDeleteHi Rachel... just wanted to let you know I featured you and your wonderful Ruffles and Dots blanket on my blog today. You can check out my post here:

Thanks for stopping by to comment one my problem. I really appreciate it. As for your hat, That's an Original!!!
ReplyDeleteOh Firefly, how I miss thee.
ReplyDeleteDo you name it Vera?
ReplyDeleteI bet she'll love it :)
ReplyDeleteAh! Love Firefly. And Serenity. I love that you made this hat!!! :)
ReplyDeleteDefinitely the most awesome.
ReplyDeleteI have one made by a friend. It's a great conversation starter. Or like the secret handshake to a special club - only the "cool kids" know what it is all about. ;)
Oh, Firefly. How I miss thee.
ReplyDeleteIt's so excitingly nerdy whenever I discover someone else who loves that show. :-) Awesome Jane hat!
